PRESS RELEASE: 100+ Local communities mark World Water Day with rain barrel fundraisers!

Every year, March 22 is set aside as World Water Day. First celebrated in 1993, the day is designated by the UN to highlight the importance of fresh water and to advocate for sustainable management of our water resources. Each year focuses on a specific theme related to sustainable fresh water and this year, the theme is Water and Energy.

In nearly every form of energy, water is used to generate and transmit it. The Earth’s water supplies are limited, but demand for energy continues to increase, putting a strain on resources everywhere, particularly in developing economies. Improved water and energy planning and coordination would make a significant difference to the more than one billion people who urgently need electricity, an improved water source, or improved sanitation systems. Water and energy are so closely related that when water is conserved, energy is conserved. When energy is conserved, water is conserved.

Canadians from Niagara Falls to Sarnia to Ottawa and in several provinces can do their part to conserve water and energy by using a rain barrel. Rain barrels provide a free source of water that is ideal for vegetables, trees, and plants because it does not contain fluoride and chlorine which are added to many municipal water systems. When outdoor water restrictions are in place, water from a rain barrel can be used to wash vehicles or water lawns. Residents can also use the water to clean floors and do laundry, and having a source of stored water can be beneficial if an emergency ever arises.

Over 100 non-profit groups across Canada officially launch their rain barrel sales on World Water Day to raise funds for their local projects. Whether it be donating to local charities, providing assistance to those in need in their community, building beautiful outdoor spaces, or promoting sustainability, these schools, horticultural societies, service clubs, and faith-based groups, all recognize the need for and the value of rain barrels and are promoting a greener future for our society.

Promote sustainable water and energy practices this World Water Day by supporting a local organization with their rain barrel sale. Sale locations can be found at www.RainBarrel.ca/Sales.

A WorldWaterDay.ca website has been set up as a resource for Canadians to share water related information and events. Watch this YouTube® video for more details on World Water Day and its importance.

2013 Fundraising Results

2013 proved to be another great fundraising season for RainBarrel.ca and our many partners. Find out what some of them have done with the funds they raised:

image

From Greenland Carl A. Nesbitt Public School:

The money we raised from our rain barrel sale helped to fight Breast Cancer and was added to our AirBand show proceeds. Together we raised over $4,000 to add to the fight. Along with our own sale, we also assisted RainBarrel.ca with a rain barrel recall, helping to improve their customer service.

From Picton County Sustainability:

We are using 50% of the funds we raised this spring to support our PECI Student Environmental Bursary Fund for 2014 graduating class, and the other 50% to support the ongoing efforts of the CSG to educate and promote sustainability and environmental progress in our community.

From Livable Sudbury:

With funds from our rain barrel sale, we built a couple of rain gardens at a local elementary school to improve the water quality reaching the lake where we get our drinking water from.

From Dundas In Transition:

Our rain barrel sale held on Saturday April 6 was a great event. Walk-up sales were much larger than expected. The money raised was used to purchase mulch, seeds and seedlings for our community garden project located at St. Mark’s United Church in Dundas. The produce from this year’s garden – donated to the Dundas Salvation Army Food Bank – was far in excess of what we grew last year. Overall we have enjoyed a very successful garden season, due in no small part to the money we raised from our rain barrel sale

From Brighton Lions:

Brighton Lions had a successful Rain Barrel Day for the second time. Proceeds from the project have helped us to buy glasses for child whose family could not afford them, pay for an orthotic boot for a family who could not afford it, sponsor a ” Children’s Village” at the local fall fair, help pay for lift for a child with cerebral palsy, make donations to many local charities like Community Care and many other community service activities. Working with Rain Barrels has been a pleasure as they are so organized and well prepared.

From Ayr Public School:

Our group (Ayr Public School) used the funds to purchase iPads for use in the classrooms.

Gatineau partners pleased with their sale From Aylmer United Church:

We at Aylmer United Church are pleased to report that we had another successful rain barrel sale.  RainBarrel.ca are a great organization to work with.  This was our 6th sale and the funds raised were used, wherever funds were needed to operate our church. Would recommend it as an excellent fundraiser for any organization.

From Russell & District Horticultural Society:

The Russell & District Horticultural Society used the money raised through our rain barrel sale to start a Children’s Fantasy Reading Garden at our local library. Over the last two years we have found RainBarrell.ca to be an easy, ecological and efficient way to raise money.

From Kanata Scouts:

Through the sales of rain barrels in 2013, the Kanata Scout groups raised funds that enabled trips to the Canadian Jamboree in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, a 7 day canoe trip in Algonquin Park, Ontario and 7 days hiking and camping in the sunshine coast area of British Columbia.

From INDEVOURS:

We are grateful for the opportunity we had in partnering with RainBarrel.ca and in connecting with members of the K-W community through rain barrel sales this summer. Due to generous support, the funds raised are being used to help offset the costs of the International Development students’ 8-month field placements. The 27 students are presently working overseas in 7 different countries for a variety of local NGOs, seeking to learn and to make positive contributions in the development field.

We are now creating partnerships for our 2014 season.
