Meet our Partner: 2nd Peterborough St. Luke's Scout Group

2nd Peterborough St. Luke’s Scouting is partnering with Rainbarrel.ca with an environmentally friendly rain barrel sale in order to fundraise towards a group trip to Mexico in 2014. All barrels are made from recycled food grade barrels and help purchasers save on their metered water costs by collecting rainwater that is healthier for gardens than watering with chlorinated municipal water, and  also allows homeowners to water their gardens at their own convenience despite municipal watering restrictions. You can order yours online for $50 by clicking here.

St. Luke’s Scouts has been established for over 100 years in East City, Peterborough, and their co-ed youth programs for ages five and up continues to be very active with an emphasis on getting the youth “out” in “scouts” and away from digital media. In 2014, a group of Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and adult leaders are planning a group trip to Mexico to return a visit with Mexican youth that spent 2 1/2 weeks in Peterborough in 2013 as part of St. Luke’s centenary celebration.

Venturer Chris Hewett, a grade 10 student who has been in scouting for eight years, is looking forward to the 2014 trip. Through scouting he’s been able to travel to Germany and Sweden for the 2011 World Scout Jamboree; a once-in-a-lifetime experience he says would not have been accessible without donations and vigorous fundraising. To reach the 2014 Mexican trip goal, a fundraising committee of youth, leaders and parents at St Luke’s have been busy with a number of endeavors including grocery bagging, metal recycling, pizza couponning, plant and pumpkin sales, and a movie night — all part of a two year plan to make the trip accessible to any group youth who would like to attend.

The beneficial influence of experience in scouting is clearly apparent in Hewett, who received his Chief Scouts Award in 2011 and is an active volunteer with the younger scouting groups. In order to achieve the Chief Scout Award, he had to complete a variety of tasks that build on citizenship and personal development, beyond the usual badge work requirements. In his own words, Hewett feels that scouting “builds good character for young boys and girls and creates building blocks for a long successful life,” and enjoys the opportunities his travels have provided to meet new people and make life-long friends from other parts of Canada and the world.

“This fundraiser is especially relevant to this trip” says parent/organizer Jeannine Crowe. “In Ontario, it’s very easy to take clean drinking water for granted — we live in a country with one of the largest amounts of fresh water in the world, and we use it to wash cars and water our lawns.” The youth visiting Mexico will be experiencing very different conditions and won’t be able to assume that water will be safe to drink from the tap, and that water supply may be limited for bathing as well.

To support the trip, rain barrels are $50 each and can be ordered online by clicking here, and are to be picked up Friday, May 10th from 3:30 PM to 7:00 PM and Saturday, May 11th from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM at The Canadian Canoe Museum, 901 Monaghan Rd. (between Romaine & Lansdowne), Peterborough, ON.

Each rain barrel comes fully equipped with a leaf and mosquito filter basket, an overflow adapter that permits multiple barrels to be connected in series, 1.2m of overflow hose and a spigot that attaches directly to a garden hose. Delivery is available within Peterborough or Lakefield for a small additional
donation.

For more information, please visit www.rainbarrel.ca/StLukesScouts or contact Jeannine Crowe by phone: 705 741 5236 or email: [email protected].

Meet our Partner: Cottam United Church

We would like to introduce one of our partners from Southern Ontario, Cottam United Church. This partner is in the small town of Cottam, which has been considered a bedroom community for Windsor. This small but vibrant community church is holding a fundraising sale to help offset the cost of a new office on their historic church building. You can purchase a rain barrel for $55 at www.RainBarrel.ca/CottamUnitedChurch.

Cottam United Church is celebrating their 146 year anniversary and 100 year anniversary of their church building. Offices have now been added to the building to accommodate the minister and his secretary so they can continue with their work ministering to their congregation. Up until this past year the office space was the home of Rev. Kim Gilliland and he and his secretary Pam used one small 10’ by 15’ room for all their work at the church.

The congregation at Cottam United Church is a very active church for the size of the community with a very large children and youth group. They have a 35 to 40 member choir and a chimes choir and most of all they all have a good time and a lot of fun.

The church is home to a number of groups for both the youth and young at heart and they support 17 different missions that provide much needed good works both close to home and around the world.

It is hoped by the fundraiser organizers that this will be a prosperous fundraising event and they thank all who participate by purchasing a rain barrel.

So if you are in the Cottam/Windsor area, consider buying a rain barrel and supporting the needed addition to this historic building so it can continue to be home to the church’s congregation for another 100 years.

Rain barrels can be purchased for $55 by clicking here and will be available for pick up on May 25th, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Church parking lot located at 137 County Rd. 34W Cottam, ON. You can also support this group by sharing this information with your friends and family.

Media Alert – New Product on Display at Toronto’s Green Living Show

Downspout Diverter Targets Toronto’s
Downspout Disconnect Bylaw

Toronto ON, April 11th, 2013 – Spring rains have arrived this week, so it seems fitting that RainBarrel.ca will display their latest products and rain barrel systems at booth 1546 at Toronto’s Green Living Show this weekend. A newly designed Universal Downspout Rain Diverter will assist Toronto residents to meet the City’s downspout disconnect bylaw and newly designed system components will delight DIY (Do-It-Yourself) enthusiasts interested in making their own rain barrels.

A downspout diverter redirects rainwater to rain barrels, pools, hot tubs, ponds, gardens or to any other similar water storage device or area. RainBarrel.ca’s new diverter product feeds up to six water storage devices simultaneously through various sized hose attachments. Standard garden hose attachments permit the option to locate rain barrels in gardens where rainwater will be needed rather than against a house as in most traditional rain barrel installations. A garden hose is all that is needed to direct rainwater from the diverter to rain barrels positioned in the garden.

A downspout diverter also simplifies the winterization process of rain barrels which must be disconnected or face the destructive force of expanding ice. Without a RainBarrel.ca downspout diverter, homeowners must remove (in Spring) and re-attach (in Fall) the lower downspout when disconnecting rain barrels. Diverter winter caps replace all hose fittings and therefore eliminate the bi-annual requirement to remove/re-attach the lower downspout. Rain barrels must be emptied, but the diverter and lower downspout can remain installed.

All RainBarrel.ca products are distributed through non-profit partners at truckload rain barrel fundraising sales. RainBarrel.ca is represented throughout Ontario and in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec through partnerships with well over 100 non-profit organizations, each raising funds for projects in their respective communities.

Please visit RainBarrel.ca at booth 1546 to view repurposed food grade rain barrels, Universal Downspout Rain Diverters and DIY rain barrel components on display.
