Let it rain! Program offering rain barrels to help ‘green’ Morden
Posted By Ashleigh Viveiros
Think of the money you’d save if you could let Mother Nature cover the costs of watering your yard.
The regional chapter of the Community Led Emissions Reduction (CLER) program is teaming up with A Rocha Prairie Canada to sell rain barrels in Morden next week.
Having a rain barrel in your yard is a great way to kill three birds with one stone, said CLER co-ordinator Kelly Stock.
“It will save you money on your water bill, save energy used for water treatment, and it will save the environment,” she said, noting rain water is great for washing your car, cleaning the dog, and, of course, watering plants in your yard – all for free.
The barrels will sell for $50 each, with $10 from each sale going to A Rocha, Stock said.
The conservation organization will use the funds raised for community-based conservation projects and climate change initiatives throughout the MSTW Planning District.
“We’re not only promoting water conservation, but are also using this event to raise money for future environmental initiatives in our region,” Stock said.
The barrels are made of reconditioned food containers, and feature top filter baskets, top-side overflow, a barrel to barrel connector, overflow hose, and bottom-side spigot with garden hose thread to make it easier to hook up to your lawncare system.
You can order a barrel in advance at www.rainbarrrel.ca/mstw by June 11, or contact Stock at 822-6223.
Barrels can be picked-up in the Morden Friendship Centre parking lot (306 North Railway) on Thursday, June 17 between 4 and 6:30 p.m.
