Hi , the instructions for this specific diverted calls to be installed “slightly higher “ to the barrel’s water intake ….. 1/2” , 1”, 2”? Please specify, or doesn’t it make a huge difference?

I have two white 220 litre rain barrels and a diverter. I notice that when raining the barrel seems to have trapped air that the rain is displacing. The air has to escape through the same hole that water is in. Am I suppose to open the other lid on the barrels?
I am trying to minimize mosquito areas so have left the 2nd barrel lid on while the diverter is connected to the first barrel lid.

I have a white sealed top rain barrel purchased several years ago. It has never really been cleaned inside and seems to have some algae built up on the inside. How do I clean this?
