The rain barrels are reused and once served as shipping containers for fruits and vegetables. They are made from high density polyethylene plastic or HDPE. They are stored outside and exposed to the sun, wind and rain. It would be wise to begin by washing them with a mild dish detergent and allowing an appropriate amount of time to dry. The final product will need to be able to withstand all types of weather. The following information and links have been copied from the internet and may be helpful in determining how best to decorate a rain barrel.

    • Outdoor acrylic craft paint or small amounts of exterior house paint work best. Provide at least 48 hours of drying time before applying top coat. Apply two coats of polyurethane spray – allow the polyurethane to dry between coats.
    • Krylon® Fusion Spray Paint for Plastic® is the answer. The line up of 35 colors includes satin and gloss to choose from!
    • The most durable option for painting plastic is the “vinyl dye” most commonly used to restore vinyl on old vehicles. Unlike regular paint, it’s actually absorbed into the plastic and it’s flexible. You can find it at auto parts stores.
