Rainbarrel.ca is pleased to join in a partnership with The Toronto Botanical Garden. The proceeds of this fundraiser will benefit the programs of the Toronto Botanical Garden (TBG).

The TBG encourages all homeowners to use rain barrels to collect rainwater to use in the garden – this is a good gardening practice with significant environmental and financial benefits. A rain barrel can save you 4,900 litres of water during the course of a year, water you can use to water your garden or wash your car. It will also provide an ample supply of “soft water,” water that doesn’t contain any chlorine, lime, or calcium – perfect for watering plants and flowers. A rain barrel can help save the environment … and your wallet!

In true environmental fashion, repurposed and well travelled bulk food barrels are taking on a new life as rain barrels. Each rain barrel comes fully equipped and ready-to-use, with a leaf and mosquito filter basket, an overflow adaptor that permits multiple barrels to be connected in series, 1.2m (4 ft.) of overflow hose and a spigot that attaches directly to a garden hose. There are three colours available – black, grey and terra cotta. All have a capacity of approximately 220 litres and are approximately 1m (38” – 40”) tall and .6m (22”) in diameter. The price is $60 per barrel. (Additional overflow hose and parts can also be purchased, if required.)

I’m wondering about the overflow hose. What is its purpose? How do I know if I would need one and what length I would need? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for asking! Each barrel comes with one overflow hose to allow you to direct any water that can no longer fit into the barrel away from the area. We offer additional hose for sale if you want more.

I would love to buy one in aid of TBG, but I won’t be here on April 23rd to be able to pick it up that weekend. Should I contact TBG about this?
    Thanks.JH

I would have loved to buy one, but these rain barrels don’t work for balconies, do they?

Two ways to make that work. Install an eavestrough on the balcony railing or tie a plastic tarp to the outside corners of the balcony to funnel water to the rain barrel. You’d be doing a great service to your plants by collecting rain water for them!

Would like to mod this too attach to downspout on side of house, does it easily attach to those pipes? Would also like to add a pipe that allows it to drain from the top in case of overflow.

Something like this would be pretty good companion, and would love to buy that via this fundraiser.

    Hi there,
Most of our customers attach these barrels to their downspouts. You can do so by merely cutting the downspout so that it hovers over the screen that filters out debris and keeps out mosquitoes. Or you can purchase a piece of flexible piping from a home maintenance store to connect it. These are typically an accordion-like hose – similar to your dryer hose but for water.
Each barrel includes a length of overflow hose which attaches with our adaptor to the top side of the barrel. The adaptor can also be used to attach more barrels in a row.
    Hope that helps you.
    Leah

Dear TBG: I live in Toronto condo with a small balcony. I checked the dimensions (38″-40″ tall and 22″ diameter)your rain barrel and I am unable to accommodate the size and weight when full on my small balcony. Do you plan to sell a smaller rain barrel for a small balcony? Thank you and much appreciated. Rebecca TBG member

Hi there and thanks for your question. What size and weight can you accommodate? Have you thought about how to capture the rain on your balcony? I hope we can figure out a way to help. Leah@RainBarrel.ca **

I was wondering what length of hose I can reasonably attach to my barrel. My downspout is at least 25 feet from my veggie garden. I’m afraid it may not work once the barrel is half full or less.

    Thanks!
    LA.

Hi, Attach any length you like but raise your rain barrel before it is full. You can place it on a deck or on bricks or other height enhancing items. Leah@RainBarrel.ca * *

Hi, the “pay now” and ‘Pay cash at pickup” feature is not showing on the Toronto Botanical Garden link on your rainbarrel.ca website. Is that a glitch on my computer or something that can be remedied at your end. Thank you.
